Bayan Lepas is a Malaysian town in the state of Penang. It’s at the southeastern tip of Penang Island, in the Southwest Penang Island District. The Penang International Airport as well as an eponymous Free Industrial Zone, called the Silicon Valley of the East due to its size, are both located in Bayan Lepas, which was founded in the 19th century. Several international electronic and engineering companies have established factories and assembly plants in the town, including Bosch, Motorola, Dell, Intel, and Hewlett-Packard.

According to folklore, a family from Sumatra created Bayan Lepas in the late nineteenth century. In 1935, the Penang International Airport, British Malaya’s first civilian airport, opened its doors. It was an agricultural area for much of the town’s history, with rice production being a key source of wealth. The Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone was established in the 1970s, ushering in the town’s rapid expansion.

Housing townships like Bayan Baru and Sungai Ara to the north, and Batu Maung to the southeast, surround Bayan Lepas proper.
